Ella Fitzgerald Ella Fitzgerald, born in 1918, ranks among some of the best jazz singers of all times. She is known greatly for her ability to improvise, flawless phrasing, and for her pure and personal tone. She was born in NewPort News, Virginia, to two loving parents. She joined her first band, The Chick Webbs Band in 1935, and then she recorded A Tisket-A-Tasket, her first big hit in 1938. In 1946 she gained worldwide fame while working with the Jazz at the Philharmonic. In the 1950s she won the first Grammy Award ever to be given to a black woman. She received this award for her Irving Berlin Songbook. She died recently on Saturday, June 15, 1996, after struggling with health problems since the mid 1980s.
