Billie Holiday

     Billie Holiday was a black, female singer of the 1930’s. She was born in 1915 in Baltimore, and was raised by her widowed mother. Billie describes her many difficulties of life in her interesting autobiography, “Lady Sings the Blues.” Early in her career she changed her name from Eleanora Fagan to Billie Holiday. Throughout her career she won many recognitions including many for the most moving singer of her day. She made her first recordings in 1933 with Benny Goodman. In 1950, she became addicted to drugs causing dangerous health problems for the rest of her life. After many great recordings, and performances she died in 1959.
