The Widewaters in Port Gibson, NY

There are many parts of the Barge Canal, but the Widewatersarea in Port Gibson, between Newark and Palmyra, is one of the most interestingparts because even though it is really wide, only a portion is wide enoughfor a boat to navigate through it. Port Gibson is located in Ontario Countyso that the county could have a port on the Erie Canal. Port Gibson neverreally attained the growth envisioned by the county planners. It is nowa Hamlet in the Town of Manchester still in Ontario County. The Widewatersis a recreation site used for fishing, boating, swimming, and ice racesfor motorcycles. If you're wondering how the Widewaters got its name, it'sbecause it is about two times wider than the parts of the Erie Canal'swaters.
