Rock Collecting

People who collect and learn about rocks for fun are called Rockhounds and that is how Mineral Man's dog got his name. You can join all of us: Mineral Man, Rockhound and the Lake Windward ThinkQuest Jr. team and become a Rockhound yourself!

Here's how:

First, get permission. Trust us, you want to do this before you do anything else!

Then, put together a rock collecting kit including these items:

bag or small box for collecting

notebook with pencil

small hammer and chisel

magnifying glass

rock identification book

You can look almost anywhere, even in your own yard, but it's really fun to go where they are building a road or building because alot of soil is turned over and you can easily see rocks that are normally hidden from view. When you see a rock you would like to learn more about or have in your collection, pick it up and put it in your bag for testing later. You can do a "field test" (check the indentification section) of hardness while your hunting but save the other tests for later so you don't waste your hunting time.
