Rock Collecting
People who collect and learn about rocks for fun are called Rockhounds and that is how Mineral Man's dog got his name. You can join all of us: Mineral Man, Rockhound and the Lake Windward ThinkQuest Jr. team and become a Rockhound yourself!

Here's how: First, get permission. Trust us, you want to do this before you do anything else! Then, put together a rock collecting kit including these items:

| You can look almost anywhere, even in your own yard, but it's really fun to go where they are building a road or building because alot of soil is turned over and you can easily see rocks that are normally hidden from view. When you see a rock you would like to learn more about or have in your collection, pick it up and put it in your bag for testing later. You can do a "field test" (check the indentification section) of hardness while your hunting but save the other tests for later so you don't waste your hunting time. |  |
