Back to World Wide Wolves
The red wolf or Canis rufus is very endangered. There were once thousands of these now rare wolves. These wolves are now less then 100 in number. Some biologists captured a group of red wolves and bred them. Later, eight red wolves were released into North Carolina's Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge with radio collar trackers. They produced many litters. Biologists also released some red wolves onto several islands off the southeastern coast of the US. Many scientists think that red wolves were created by the interbreeding of wolves and coyotes.
