For thousands of years, gray wolves were one of the most widely distributed mammals on earth. In the early nineteen hundreds, humans nearly trapped, poisoned and shot the gray wolf almost to extinction in parts of the United States. Although with the help of a federal plan, they reintroduced the gray wolf to its former habitat. The plan was hugely successful.
Gray wolves presently live in the northwestern U. S., north central U. S. and also slightly east of north central U. S. They are found in almost all of Canada and the Arctic and can also be found in the northern border of Greenland. In the past, they were also found in all of the United States and in Mexico.
