IMPORTANT PEOPLE

John Smith- Captain John Smith took control in mid 1608 to mid 1609. He told the colonists that they had to start to work for their survival. He bought corn from the Indians. An accident caused Smith to return to England. This accident was caused by an explosion of his gunpowder on his hip. It was probably ignited by another sailor’s smoking pipe.

Captain Christopher Newport- Christopher Newport was the captain of the Susan Constant.

Pocahontas- Pocahontas was Chief Powhatan’s daughter who saved John Smith’s life and later married John Rolfe.

 SHIPS

The Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed were the three ships who carried the colonists to Jamestown, Virginia.

THE FORT

The most important places to the colonists were the church, armory, storehouse, guardhouse, and their twenty homes. The church was where they worshipped God. The armory was where they kept their weapons. The storehouse was where they stored their most important belongings, mostly food. Their homes were not as roomy as they are today and didn’t have as much modern -day furniture as we do today. The guardhouse was where the guards stayed and protected the fort which belonged to the colonists of Jamestown, Virginia.
