Jamestown is being settled for London Company in search of gold and trade. Because life in Virginia is hard, women are not allowed. They will have to come later when we have settled.
Finally, early on the morning of April 26, our three ships dropped anchor in a bay on the Virginia coast.
On May 13, 1607, we left our ships and brought our belongings ashore. Our elected president of the council, who is Edward Maria Wingfield has said that he declared this site named Jamestown, after our present king, King James the first of England.
The next day, I told the colonists they must begin to build our fort, as protection from the Indians. Everyone will help! We made a sturdy timber frame. We wove branches and saplings to make a wall material called wattle. Then we put a mixture of clay, sand, straw, and water. This was called daub. We used reeds to thatch the roof or covered them with planks.
We have been informed that this Indian chief's name is Chief Powhatan and his daughters name is Pocahontas.
