Antietam
On
September 17, 1862, Lee's outnumbered army faced the Union forces at Antietam
Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. As the two armies clashed, the tide of
battle flipped back and forth: "Again and again, hour after hour . . .
[a] portion of the field was lost and recovered, until the corn that had
grew there had looked like it had been hit by a storm of bloody hail."
A total of at least 23,000 were hurt or injured. That is why is it was
called the "bloodiest battle of the Civil War."
