GLOSSARY OF TERMS
 

Astronaut- a person who is trained to make flights in outer space.

Antigravity- no gravity.

Cadmium- another type of steel

Commander - the person who is in charge of the mission

Crew- the group of people on the mission, pilot, commander

Docked-  landing and connecting to another space vehicle

Mission Specialist - Person selected to perform special task on space flights (they are usually experts in their field)

Module- a portion of a space vehicle

Graphite- a mixed metal that is very light.

Insulation- a protective material for space suits, space vehicle to protect from the elements

Lift-Off - When a space vehicle is sent into space

NASA- National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Orbit- When something revolves around another object

Pay-load specialist-  persons,  (including foreign nationals) who have
specialized  onboard duties; they are career scientist or engineers selected by their employer or there country for their expertise in conducting a specific experiment

Shuttle - a vehicle designed to go into outer space and carry astronauts and equipment to and from the Space Station.  This special vehicle can be returned to Earth and used again
 
Space craft- a vehicle used in outer space.

Space Station- a man made laboratory in space for research purposes.

Spin offs- ltems that is created by or through the space program that has benefited mankind in some way. The item is changed a bit before it goes to the public. (check out our spin-off list)

Soyuz- a Russian space vehicle.  It will take the first manned crew to the station

X-38 - the crew return vehicle.( holds 4 people)
