We "surfed the web" and found out that although the Internet is very helpful
and is safe in many ways, it can also be dangerous. Some of your
favorite places such as chat rooms or different web sites can be very dangerous.
In chat rooms people not only see whatever you type but can e-mail you or instant message you if you have AOL (America Online). Some people may be harmless, but most aren't! Some people pretend to be other people (they usually pretend to be your age, share the same hobbies, and pretend to have a lot in common). If someone like this talks to you, tell them politely you can't talk or that you would rather not talk to them right now. By doing this you're keeping yourself safe.
You never know what might be on a web site. Many web sites are safe for kids, but may have links or pictures that link to harmful or inappropriate information and pictures.
If you go to an inappropriate site or recieve mail that makes you feel uncomfortorable or is just plan BAD tell an adult right away. They can help you figure out what sites and chat rooms are safe for you and which ones aren't.
