Penguins

Penguins are rare these days in fact there are only 10,000 Humboldt penguins left in the world. The normal size of a Humboldt penguin is 15-18'' and they can weigh 9 lbs. The diet of a Humboldt penguin is fish and squid. Even though Penguins do not fly, they are part of the bird family.

Humboldt penguins only live in the southern hemisphere. Penguins can breed any time of the year and usually they have 1-3 eggs. Did you know that penguins can swim up to 30 miles an hour? That's fast don't you think? All penguins eat a fish head first because the fins would get caught in the penguin's neck.

Catastrophic molting

Every year Humboldt penguins go through catastrophic molting. No, they don't die, but they do loose all of their feathers. They look absolutely UGLY. This happens once a year between July and September. It takes about 10 days for the penguins to loose their feathers.

People come to the penguinarium and they always ask, "Are the penguins ok? Do they have mange?" Molting, however, is perfectly normal.
