TREE KANGAROOS

Matschie tree kangaroo may sound like a monkey but it is not, it is actually a kangaroo that lives in trees. They have a long tail that they use for balancing in high places. These small kangaroos have a red mahogany-brown back. They have a bright yellow face, belly and feet. The long cylindrical tail is mostly yellow. Their powerful forelimbs and hind limbs are the same length. Matschie tree kangaroos grow to stand about two feet to two-and-a-half feet tall. They can weigh 15-17 pounds. This very special kangaroo usually lives to be about 14 years old.

The Matschie tree kangaroo lives in central and eastern New Guinea. Their main enemies are humans and dingoes. The Matschie's can move fast. On the ground, they can run 2.8 miles an hour and they can jump to another tree 30 feet off the ground!

In the wild, they eat fruit and leaves. In the zoo, they eat potatoes, bananas, and hard-boiled eggs.

Matschie tree kangaroos are rare and on the animal extinction list.
