GRIZZLY BEARS

Grizzly bears are magnificent creatures that are, unfortunately an endangered species. They weigh 700-1000 pounds and because they are so heavy, grizzlies don't like to climb trees. That is probably lucky for us! Grizzly bears and other bears like to have their own space. They set up their own territories ranging from 10- to 1,000 square miles.

The ferocious grizzly bear stands to be about 8 to 9 feet tall. These bears live in Northern North America in the wild parts of Alaska and Canada. They can have creamy yellow to nearly black fur. This bear has a massive, broad, squarish head and a very muscular body. They have a huge shoulder hump made of muscle, some of it is connected to their powerful jaws.

After birth, the cubs stay with their mothers for two to three years. Then they leave to mark their own territories. They live to be about 30 years old in the wild and live longer in captivity. Grizzlies eat roots, fish, small animals, leafy plants, and berries. When they are angry they can run 36 miles an hour!
