Great White Shark

The great white is the largest and most feared shark of the mackerel family. Great Whites are usually found in the Mediterranean because they prefer warm water.

Great Whites are usually gray on top but some even have black spots behind each pectoral fin. These sharks can swim very fast , going at speeds of 22 mph. A great white skeleton is made of something called gristle.

When a great white matures it is about 11-14 ft in length. The females can have up to nine young. All sharks pups including the great white's can look after themselves as soon as they are born.

They have teeth big enough to feed on a seal or possibly a whale. Once in a while they may attack another shark as well. The great white attacks animals that make funny noises or that are bleeding or injured, and they can smell blood from a mile away. A shark like the great white may grow as much as 2,400 teeth in ten years. Sharks can choke and die from a fish called the porcupine fish. They choke because when they try to swallow it, it will swell up in the sharks throat. .
