Under the greenwood tree,
Who loves to lie with me,
And turn his merry note,
Unto the sweet bird’s throat,
Come hither, come hither, come hither
Here shall he see no enemy
But winter and rough weather.
Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets. A sonnet is a 14 line poem that has a certain rhyme and rhythm to it. It's name is an Italian word meaning "little song." There are different forms of sonnets from around the world, but Shakespeare's has been accepted as the typical English form. One of his sonnets was about the "dark lady".
Shakespeare put energy into his poems. He didn't earn a lot of money writing poems. He wrote them during the times that the theaters had to be closed because of the plague.
