Risks Involved

There are many risks of getting a new heart.  Below are three main ones.

1.  Your body may reject the new heart.
Your immune system helps your body fight off germs.  It is your bodyís defense against infection.  Your body knows that the heart is not your own and tries to get rid of it as if it was a germ.  This is what we call rejection.

2.  You will have a greater risk of having an infection.  You have this risk because of a medicine you take for the rest of your life to prevent rejection.  (The medicine is Cyclosporine, Imuran, and prednisone.)  These medicines lower your bodyís defense system so you will be more at risk for infection.

3.  You will have side effects from the medicines you take.
