Modern Heart Transplants
Doctors are busy every day with new inventions in many things.  But, in medicine, keeping the heart beating is a top priority.  It is not always easy though. The heart has many enemies.  Diseases such as viruses can invade and destroy heart tissue.  Mechanical parts can wear out.  Globs of fat can block blood vessels.  The muscle can weaken with age.  The heart's built-in timer can misfire. What can modern medicine do about it?  Mend it sometimes.  Below you will take a tour of how people go through heart transplants today.

To begin with people need to decide if a heart transplant is really needed. Would it be better to live with your old heart or someone else's heart. Ask yourself what you would think if you knew that you have a foreign person's heart. Would you be scared? What do you think the reactions of your body be when finding out that there is a foreign object in you? Well, your body would most likely reject it. That is why after a heart transplant a lot of medication is required. A lot of side effects might occur also. However, this may be the only thing that would let you live. (When people have heart transplants they are scared and unsure of what might happen next.

Have you ever had a relative or close friend have a heart transplant? I f so, you know what it is like to worry.  Well, after the decision has been made you will be tested to see how bad you need a new heart.  Your blood type will also be on record.  Once you are on the list you will have to wait a long, long time.  Some people die waiting.  You will always be prepared, with a bag next to your bed, or with you at all times.  If you become very sick and it is possible that you can not make it with even a new heart then  you will be taken off the list.  Let's say you are sill in pretty good shape for a new heart, and the time arrives when there is one available.  If you are at work and they call you to tell that the time has come and you must come now or the heart will start to rot.

N ow, let's stop it there and let's ask what do you think it would feel like to know that you are going to have the biggest surgery in your life and it will be a long time after before  you recover.  You are sure to be frightened but you still have some confidence left from all the hard work and explaining the doctors did for them.  Also, if you where this person what do you think your family will like? I bet they hope it all works for you and for all the money they spent for this day to happen.

Finally, you are being rolled into the hospital room that is for your surgery. You have a scary feeling in your stomach for you can't believe what is going to happen.  Also, the surgeons have masks on their faces and gloves on their hands to protect them from any germs. The nurses that are helping are bringing in all sorts of tools like scissors and pliers. They raise you onto the bed and they give you some medicine. Soon, all is black and you fall into a very deep, painless sleep.

A couple of hours later you wake up and feel a big pain in your chest. Then you realize it, you have a new heart. . .
