In the 1960's and the early 1970's there were video games like Tic-Tac-Toe, Hangman, and chess, but it was hard because everything was in words and you had to type your move. Later Nolan Bushnell invented Pong. Five years after he founded the company it became the world's top manufacturer of electronic games.
Atari released Asteroids and Lunar Lander. About 80,000 copies of Asteriods were sold in the U.S. It was less popular in other countries. It was Atari's all-time best-seller.
In 1985 a new system was invented. It was called the Nintendo Entertainment System (N.E.S.). It included the concept of the "level". It had better graphics and new games, so everybody wanted it. Nintendo released Donkey Kong. The hero was originally called Jumpman. Later he was named Mario by N.O.A.(Nintendo of America).
1990's
After the the N.E.S. Nintendo created the Super N.E.S. for $249.95.
In 1996 the Nintendo 64 was released,over 1.7 million units were sold in three months. It had much better graphics than the Super N.E.S.
