LIFE IN ROME

Roman lifestyle was often very interesting, in both city and country life. In the cities poor people did not live in the streets, but their apartments were very small and dirty. The rich people usually lived in large houses, or even mansions. Some slaves worked there, selling their owner's trade.

The streets in the cities were very dirty, with broken wine bottles and half-eaten food all over the ground. The people who lived in the city were very afraid of fires. When there was a fire, it was rarely put out without the building being destroyed.

There was a law that you couldn’t move wheeled vehicles during the day because the city was too crowded, so there was still plenty of noise during the night.

Life in the country was very much different than the city. There were no farms in Rome, but in other places in Italy there were farms that sent food to Rome, and some people in Rome owned farms in other places.

The farms owned by the people from Rome were the main source of food. Those farms were very luxurious, owned by rich people. They employed farm managers and slaves who lived in a building called the villa rustica. Pork was a very popular food, so most farmers owned lots of pigs. There were twelve special gods just for the country.
