EMPERORS

When Augustus died in AD 14, the Roman Senate declared him a god. From then onward, people worshipped the emperors, and temples were dedicated to them all over the Empire. These buildings reminded everyone of the emperor's power. Statues were erected to celebrate victories in war and also helped to advertise the strength of rulers. Emperors issued coins bearing their images, and commissioned paintings, mosaics and sculptures of themselves and their families. The style and symbolism of these portraits often tell more about the way an emperor wished his subjects to see him rather than showing what they were really like.
