Most legionaries wore plated armor like this:
Plated armor is lots of metal plates put together by leather strips.

But some wore chain mail like this.Chain mail is lots of little circular links of metal linked together.

Cavalry are men riding on horseback. Cavalry probably wore chain mail, a small shield and a short sword.

A Roman Legion consisted of 5,000 foot soldiers who were divided into nine groups called cohorts, the same size led by a larger tenth cohort. Cohorts were divided into six even centuries. A century used to contain 100 men but was later reduced to 80 so the group was easier to handle. Centuries were divided into groups of eight soldiers who shared a tent and ate together. Each legion carried a silver eagle into battle. If the eagle fell into the enemy's hands, the legion was disbanded.
