The Manhattan project was the name given to the atomic
bomb project developed during World War II. The official agency that
produced and developed the bomb was the Corps of Engineer's Manhattan Engineer
District, (CEMED). The project's purpose was to create a weapon of
mass destruction, which the United States would later use to bomb Japan
in 1945, which ended the war.
