Christopher's Teen Years
Christopher Columbus had little education when he was a teenager. He convinced himself that if he set sail when he got older, he would find gold. He always dreamed of finding the new world some day. When Christopher Columbus finally got to go on his first ship, he was at the age of 14. In his teen years he had already been on a couple of his journeys.
One of the worst stories about Christopher Columbus was that he once offered a reward to the first sailor who saw land on his first voyage in 1492. Then he tried to cheat the sailor out of his money by claiming in his journal that he had been the first to see land.
Christopher's Adulthood
Christopher Columbus was born in 1451. During his childhood he had hardly any education and he never learned to write or read until he was an adult. By 1480, Christopher had become very interested in westward voyages. He began to believe that Japan would be 3,000 miles off the west coast of Portugal. In 1484 Christopher went to King John for support. King John gave him three ships to find the new world. He had four voyages in all his travels. The fourth time he found the new world he, went back to tell King Ferninad.
