Pilot Whale

There are Two types of Pilot Whale. The long-finned Pilot Whale (globicepala melas) and the short-finned Pilot Whale (globicephala macrorhynchus).

The long finned Pilot Whale can be found in the Atlantic, Arctic, and Pacific oceans and some coastal waters (Or in the sub polar zones). The Northern and Southern populations are isolated from each other. Long-finned Pilot Whales have pods up to 1,000 or more whales. That's a lot of whales! Female long-finned Pilot Whales can grow up to 14 to 20 feet. Both male and female can weigh up to 3 tons(6,000 pounds!). They usually eat squid, octopus, cod, (a type of fish) turbot, and fish. Did you know that they will dive deep depths to catch the squid and octopus? Well, they will! They will also forage in rank- also with other species of whales. The long-finned Pilot Whale have often seen doing displays above the water. Some groups have been seen floating on the surface(rafting). Scientists are guessing that they are resting.

Both species have big round melon shaped head and huge dorsal fin. They both are either generally black to dark brown to gray skin color. They also have 48 peg-like teeth.
