Baleen & Toothed Whales

Baleen Whales

Baleen whales have 200-270 baleen that have long bristles hanging off of them. The baleen strains the water for food such as krill and other small animals. All of the baleen whales have one thing in common; the females are larger than the males. Baleen plates can get up to 9.5 feet long. The baleen is grayish black to white in color. Baleen and toothed whales are different in many ways, but they also have many similarities.

Toothed Whales

Toothed whaled have teeth instead of baleen to chew and swallow prey. The animals that toothed whales eat are larger in size than the animals that baleen whales eat. Baleen whales eat animals in larger quantities than toothed whales do. Whales are fascinating creatures, and there is many things to learn and discover about them.
