General Information

Meriwether Lewis was good friends with Thomas Jefferson as a child.  They became very good friends at childhood (and later they worked together).When President Jefferson was elected president Meriwether Lewis was his seceratary  .President Jefferson had just bought the NorthWest territory and he wanted the Americans to see what he had bought so he sent Lewis to go discover the NorthWest Passage (a water way from the Missouri River to the  Picific Ocean). Lewis hired many other men to go on the expedition.  He hired one  man to help lead the expedition with him Captain William Clark ,a man who Lewis had met in the war. They had also become good friends. Lewis and Clark set on the expedition with their men on May 14, 1804 down the Missouri River.   At first it was very tough but it got better as they went on.  Sometimes it was harsh other times it was calm and fine. The expedition ended on September 20, 1806
