Cottonwood
| Black cottonwood and Plains cottonwood are common in Montana. Plains cottonwood tall and can get up to heights of sixty to ninety feet! The leaves are broadly triangular and are around three to six inches long. Black cottonwoods are the biggest kind of cottonwood. Its leaves are oval shaped. It is also found in the forests of Alaska and the Yukon southward to southern California and western Nevada. Sometimes this tree is called the western balsam poplar. |
Prickly Pear Cactus
| The Corps ate the prickly pear cactus for food. Settlers along the Missouri river used the cactus to clean the muddy river.Some Indians used the prickly pear cactus for paint. They also used it for wounds. It grows all the way from Alberta, British Columbia and to southern Arizona. The flowers are bright pink.Lewis and Clark found these around Montana and bordering states. | + |
