The Lady of the night is a cactus that
has a bloom a foot wide.

Dune Evening Primrose

  This creeping dune plant is bushy and  can
grow 18 " tall and 40" wide. Its many
blooms are up to 3" wide.

  Saguaro Cacti      Saguaro's bloom

State flower of Arizona, the Saguaro Cactus only grows
about an inch per year. But, have grown as tall
as 50 feet, with more than 50 arms, and with a weight
of over 1,000 lbs. It has clusters of these 3" blooms
on the tips of its arms.
                   

 

  Plants

                It's interesting that plants have nocturnal habits. Before we started this project, we didn't think that plants would bloom just in the evening.

                The ones that do all depend on nocturnal insects and animals to pollinate them. They are lighter in color or white so they will show up better at night. And they are very fragrant so they will attract the insects.

                 Many of them live in the desert. But, some can adapt to a cooler climate for gardens.

There are many more night bloomers, but getting pictures of them isn't easy.
