Galaxies A galaxy is a cluster of hundreds of billions stars and planets. Each galaxy has its own shape...Spiral, Elliptical, or Irregular. There are so many galaxies that they cluster, also. Our solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy which belongs to the supercluster of galaxies called The Local Group. Earth is 28,000 light years away from the center of The Milky Way. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Scientists measure in light years because normal measurement would give a number too big to imagine. Andromeda, the largest galaxy in The Local Group, is more that 2 million light years away from us. And, it's so big that we can see it without a telescope. But, because it's so far away, the light we see actually began its trip here long ago, when man first lived on Earth.
