Crickets

When you hear the chirping of crickets at night, you're hearing males calling for mates. They try to drown out the sound of the other males so females will hear him and be attracted to him. They make the sound by rubbing special veins on their wings together.  They have different songs if there is danger or if they are fighting.

Crickets, grasshoppers and locusts are all in the insect group, Orthoptera.
