Stars
by Thomas L. Howe
Did you ever go out at night and
watch the stars?
I don't mean, merely watch,
but did you ever make friends with them?
I do sometimes.
I don't know the names of individual stars or constellations.
I don't even know which one of the tiny points of light are sister planets of this Earth
of ours.
But, I like to watch them,
and give them personalities.
There is a big, bright star in the Northeastern sky about this
time of year,
with no others around him.
He seems to be a big, hearty fellow,
but, rather superior to the others.
The others seem to be afraid of him,
and give him a wide berth.
Then there are three little
stars, not very bright,
far down in the Southern sky.
I like to think of them as sisters.
They are very homeloving, and, I imagine,
very beautiful.
They always shine with a steady, soft light that seems like
the glow of peace.
My favorite, however, is a
tiny, twinkling rogue,
almost over-head.
He seems to be the jolliest, merriest, funniest star that ever
laughed at the Earth below.
He is never steady or bright, or dignified,
but is always in a rollicking mood.
He is always making fun of the reat of the stars,
but, never in a mean way, and
they can never be angry at him long.
And then he looks down at me and laughs.
Did you ever go out and watch
the stars?
I do sometimes.

You hear something running through
dead leaves
What's that?!!
You look...nothing's there.
You take little steps back...one by one.
You hear trees swaying.
The wind is blowing you closer to home.
RUN! RUN!! RUN from the humans!!!
