Armadillos The armadillo lives in the North and South American plains, forests, tropics, and subtropics. It is related to the sloth and anteater. These mammals live alone, in pairs, or in small groups. They live in burrows and are mostly nocturnal feeding on insects, veggies, and small animals. They have short legs with strong, curved claws to help dig. Its body is covered with a protective armor, and is usually brown or pink. When it is scared, it tucks itself in to touch its toes, or runs to its burrow for protection. The three-banded armadillo can roll itself into a ball, making it hard for the predator to pry open.
