Leeches

The saliva of leeches contains an ANTICOAGULANT called hirudin. This keeps blood clots from forming and can dissolve them as well. Leeches were once widely used for bloodletting (bleeding). They are still used by surgeons to maintain circulation in small blood vessels during delicate operations. Medical researchers are investigating the usefulness of proteins in leech saliva.

Another gross anatomy fact happened in the 1930's before antibiotics and sulfa drugs were invented. Doctors cured stubborn cases of bone infection by using maggots of certain species of bluebottle fly, Lucilia, that had been grown under sterile laboratory conditions. An accidental discovery, during the U.S. Civil War, that wounded soldiers infested with such maggots tended to exhibit better rates of recovery then did uninfected soldiers. Apparently, maggots eat only dead and decaying tissue. They keep harmful bacteria from growing through use of the secretions.

Diarrhea

The popular over-the-counter diarrhea product called Kaopectate is actually derived from the naturally occurring pectin in the apples pectin has been known to be effective against several types of bacteria that can cause diarrhea. the pectin fiber works by basically doubling or tripling in volume in the intestinal track, thereby adding volume to the stool. Additionally, intestinal bacteria translates that pectin into a defensive coating for the irritated and inflamed lining.

Try apple cider vinegar to calm your stomach. The trick is to sip an 8 oz. glass of apple cider vinegar and warm water over a period of an hour. Take a sip to see how your intestines accept it. Wait 10 minutes, then take another sip. If it seems to be working, try another glass 2 hours later. Remember that if the condition doesn't improve in 3 days or if it worsens, it is best to stop home treatment and seek a medical opinion.

Cinnamon tea can ease nausea as well as halt acute or chronic diarrhea. However, if the nausea or diarrhea continues for longer than 3 days or if the symptoms, worsen stop the use of the tea and see a doctor.
