When a Trukese man loved a young woman
he would show her his carved lovestick. Then he would go out into
the night and he would push the lovestick into the woman’s hut. The
crunch would wake the woman up. If the woman pulled the stick in, she liked
the man. But if she pushed it out, she did not like the man. Then
the woman would creep out into the night and meet the man if she wanted
to.
