These incredibly soft, spongy masses are actually many celled animals that have been kicking around the world for over 600 million years.  They reproduce by sending a cloud of sperm and eggs into the water.  They are made from several different materials.  Sponges have chambers which allow large amounts of water to be pumped through their bodies.
