The Pilar is a wrecked galleon (ship)
near Cocos Island off the coast of Guam. On June 2, 1690, the Pilar
hit the southern reef of Cocos Island. The Pilar was traveling from Mexico
to the Phillipines to a fair in Manilla. It was carrying silver,
gold, swords, and artifacts. With the bottom of the ship torn the
Spanish ship sunk in the Pacific Ocean at the depths 30 to 87 feet.
Only its Naval crew and some Franciscan missionariers escaped before the
Pilar slipped into the ocean. In 1991, 1,500 artifacts were brought
up from the pilar. More artifacts are still being salvaged. |
