Ellis Island at a Glance


This is a picture of a poster in one of the Ellis Island exhibit rooms.

1. Before Ellis Island opened, the immigration station was at Castle Garden located at the tip of Manhattan.

2. Ellis Island opened in 1892.

3. Located in New York Harbor in New York City.

4. First thirty years were the most packed.

5. Over 14,000,000 passed through Ellis Island from 1892 through 1922.

6. Immigrants were inspected by doctors and legal inspectors.

7. About 98 per cent of immigrants were admitted to America. This means that after all the examinations, 2 per cent of immigrants were sent back to their native countries.

8. Inside Ellis Island there were waiting rooms, dorms, restaurants, hospitals, bag rooms, a post office, banks, a railroad office, bathrooms and baths, and places to do your laundry.

9. Instead of the whole family coming at the same time, a lot of times the father would come first to make some money and send it back to the rest of the family. Gradually would bring over whole family.

10. Some left their home country because of famine, natural disasters, or disease.

11. Some immigrants came to America looking for a place with a decent job, free schools, and food.

12. Two million left Russian Jews left Russia in the 1800's and early 1900's left because of massacres (known as pogroms).

13. A lot immigrants left their countries to avoid serving the army.

14. A lot immigrants left their countries to flee from the country's dictator.

15. A lot immigrants left their countries because of a lack of money during the industrial revolution.

16. Ellis Island was originally 3.3 acres. Today it is 28 acres. It was made bigger with landfill from the construction of the New York City subway system

17. It was designated a Federal Immigration Station by President Benjamin Harrison in 1890.

18. The first immigration building on Ellis Island was made out of Georgia pine and a slate roof.
