Tree fern
Did
you know there are two latin words for tree fern? They are Ilex cookii
and Cyathea dryopterodes.
The tree
fern is so big it can go up to the Understory and sometimes up to the Canopy.
A dwarf
tree fern can be only twenty four inches in height and one inch in diameter.
A giant
tree fern can be as high as 3,280 feet. That's why it is so much bigger
than a person. The bark is a brownish color. The twigs are hairless and
green, and the leaves are leathery.
The tree
fern is such a distinctive plant and became a national symbol in New Zealand.
Tree ferns
have four small roots. Later the tree fern reproduces another tree fern
by spores. Spores look like little brown dots that wait for
the weather to be perfect and then later grow.
