Wildlife of The Andes

The Andes is home to many exciting and wonderful animals.

For example, the largest flying birds in the world, the Andean condors, have a wingspan of ten feet! They also live in higher elevations unlike many other animals, especially other birds, who thrive mainly in the low and intermediate elevations. These great birds are a beautiful sight to see.

Another interesting animal is the Spectacled bear. These animals are very small, and, believe it or not, they were named for the white circles around their eyes that look like spectacles. The only bear in all of South America is the spectacled bear.

Other interesting animals that live in the Andes include the cougar, ocelot, opossum, coatimundi, llama, alpaca, guanaco, and vicuna, These animals are different in that the llama, alpaca, guanaco, and vicuna live on the altiplano, while the cougar, ocelot, opossum and coatimundi live in low and intermediate elevations. The cougar, ocelot, opossum and coatimundi are all mammals.
