Habitat and Habits
-lives high up in rainforests of Malaysia and Sumatra
         -travels rapidly through trees by moving arm over arm/swinging from branch to branch
         -walks along branches if they are too big to grip with hands
-communicates by calling to others
         -has the loudest call of all gibbons
         -can be heard from two miles away
-has a large throat sac
         -almost size of head
         -used to amplify call
-male and female pairs call in unison along with young
         -calling serves to announce territories and develop bonds
-sleeps at night
        -sleeps sitting upright in high branches of tree
        -sleeps in center of range
-special pads on rump help it to rest comfortably
-lives in a small, close-knit family group
         -consists of adult male and female, and two or three young
-grooming is a major social activity which strengthens bonds
-at age eight, young move out and start their own group

Food and Feeding
-almost totally vegetarian
-diet consists mainly of leaves and ripe fruit
        -figs are the favorite fruit
-also gets protein from insects, and occasionally from bird eggs
-feeds during day
-occupies a home range of up to 100 acres
-seldom need to travel more than a mile to find enough food

-all gibbon species are rapidly declining in numbers
-unless rainforest destruction stops, many species will be endangered

Features
-hands are cup shaped for gripping
-throat sac enlarges to amplify calls
-legs are strong, uses back to walk upright
-calls are used to define territories
-rump has callus like pads for cushions
