Habitat
and Habits
-live in dense evergreen forest
-lives in troops of 16-18 adults, infants, and juveniles
-in areas with plentiful food, the troops are
larger
-troops have more than one male
-only one is dominant
-shy in general
-if disturbed, will hide in leaves of trees, or
run quickly and silently
-active during the day
-moves quietly
-has large range
-can live for 26 years in captivity
-communicates with low moaning call |

Food
and Feeding
-likes to eat fruit, insects, leaves, roots, crops
-prefers bulky nutritious foods: fruits, tubers, corn
-searches for food in small groups
-definite social structure
-high ranking members eat first
-if food is scarce, low ranking members may starve
-often raids cultivated fields
-during raids, work silently
-choose only the best corn/tubers
-usually young adult male stands guard
-group rarely stays in one place to eat
-when fruit trees are discovered, members stay to eat
-older members may remember a tree, and bring others to it

-in Sumatra they are trained to collect
coconuts
-in Malaya they are trained by botanists to
collect specimens from tops of trees
-macaque meat is very popular
-this has led to rapid decline in population
