Virginia
entered the Union on June 25, 1788 as the 10th state. It is nicknamed the Old
Dominion. Eight U.S. Presidents were born in Virginia. Their names were Jefferson,
Washington, Madison, Monroe, Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, and Wilson. Since so many presidents
were born in Virginia, it is also called the "Mother of Presidents."
Virginias important products are chemicals and cigarettes. Virginia is
the leading state in coal mining, raising turkeys, and growing tobacco. About fifty
million people visit Virginia every year. Six of Virginias eight largest
cities are on Virginias southeast coast. Virginia Beach has 29 miles of sandy
beaches. Norfolk, Virginias second largest city, is one of Americas leading
seaports.
