Vaflag.gif (1197 bytes)   Virginia entered the Union on June 25, 1788 as the 10th state. It is nicknamed the Old Dominion. Eight U.S. Presidents were born in Virginia. Their names were Jefferson, Washington, Madison, Monroe, Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, and Wilson. Since so many presidents were born in Virginia, it is also called the "Mother of President’s."   Virginia’s important products are chemicals and cigarettes.  Virginia is the leading state in coal mining, raising turkeys, and growing tobacco.  About fifty million people visit Virginia every year.  Six of Virginia’s eight largest cities are on Virginia’s southeast coast.  Virginia Beach has 29 miles of sandy beaches. Norfolk, Virginia’s second largest city, is one of America’s leading seaports.

Design a travel brochure for the Virginia Beach area.
Research one of the many presidents born in Virginia.  Tell something about them that made them famous.
Write a poem or a song about Virginia,  include as many symbols or facts as you can.
