Scflag.gif (1069 bytes)  South Carolina entered the Union on May 23, 1788 as the eighth state and was one of the original 13 states. Its capital is Columbia and is nicknamed Palmetto state . Two presidents that were born in South Carolina. There names are President Andrew Jackson and Vice President John C. Calhoun. South Carolina is named after Charles the 1st and Charles the 2nd of England. It is bordered to the North by North Carolina, to the the west and southwest by Georgia, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The Myrtle Beach area and Hilton Head Island are popular coastal resorts.
