Oregon entered the Union on February 14, 1859, as state number
33. In French, Oregon means hurricane a name formally applied to the Columbia
River. Fur traders entered the region in 1793. The immense wilderness, lived
only Native American tribes, it was explored in 1804-6 by Famous explorers Meriwether
Lewis and William Clark. In the 1900s Oregons population has more than
quadrupled. Oregon is called the beaver state.
