Oreflag.gif (370 bytes)    Oregon entered the Union on February 14, 1859, as state number 33.  In French, Oregon means hurricane a name formally applied to the Columbia River.  Fur traders entered the region in 1793.  The immense wilderness, lived only Native American tribes, it was explored in 1804-6 by Famous explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.  In the 1900’s Oregon’s population has more than quadrupled.  Oregon is called the beaver state.

Do you need a project for your school report?  Here are some ideas from Challenge magazine, Issue 80, which  you can use to show what you have learned about Oregon.

Create an oil painting of Oregon's state bird and flower.
Compare a trip on the Oregon Trail in 1897 and one in 1997.
Learn the state song of Oregon.  Record it and play it for the school.
Create a cookbook of recipes using fish.
Have students discover the favorite recreational sports in Oregon and compare them to the popular sports in your state.
Oregon comes from the French word for "hurricane."  Write a tall tale about the origin of the name Oregon.
Make a map of Oregon using overlays to show the mountains, rivers, roads, and cities.
