North Carolina
entered the Union on November 21, 1789 as the 12th state and was one of the original 13
states. Its capital is Raleigh and is nicknamed the Tar Heel State. James K.
Polk and Andrew Johnson were two U.S. Presidents that were born in North Carolina.
North Carolina is bordered to the south by South Carolina and Georgia, to the north by
Virginia, to the west by Tennessee, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.
North Carolina has many sandy beaches along the coast and lots of
mountains with many trees. The coastal area of North Carolina has two seashores, Cape
Hatteras and Cape Lookout. Near Charlotte, North Carolina is Carowinds, which is a huge
amusement park that attracts lots of tourists to North Carolina every year.
