Montana entered the Union on November 8, 1889, as state number 41. The name
Montana comes from a Spanish word meaning mountainous. Montana is called the
Treasure State. Montana is the fourth largest state with a area of 147,046 square
miles. In 1828, the American Fur Company built a large post called Fort Union to
handle the trade.
