Mtflag.gif (1239 bytes)   Montana entered the Union on November 8, 1889, as state number 41.  The name Montana comes from a Spanish word meaning mountainous.   Montana is called the Treasure State. Montana is the fourth largest state with a area of 147,046 square miles.  In 1828, the American Fur Company built a large post called Fort Union to handle the trade.

Do you need a project for your school report?  Here are some ideas from Challenge magazine, Issue 79, which  you can use to show what you have learned about Montana.

There are many rivers in Montana.  Draw a map of the major rivers and tributaries.  Discuss how, where, and why the rivers drain.
Over 45,000 Native Americans live in Montana.  Research the tribes and their customs.
Make a miniature Native American village.
Research the ghost town in Dillon, Montana.  Write a ghost story using factual information and a lot of imagination.
Read about Harry Plummer.   Tell your class the story of this famous sheriff.
Chief Joseph played a significant role in the history of Montana.  Write a poem about his life and its importance.
