Kyflag.gif (1161 bytes)   Kentucky entered the Union on June 1, 1792, as the 15th state.  Its capital is Frankfort and it is nicknamed the Bluegrass State. Kentucky is bordered to the north by Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, to the east by West Virginia and Virginia, to the South by Tennessee, and to the west by Missouri.  The Big Sandy river and the Tug Fork river form Kentucky’s eastern border, and the Mississippi River forms Kentucky’s western border. Kentucky was named for the Kentucky River.
    Many people visit Kentucky’s many parks. Almost two-thirds of the people that visit Kentucky visit Mammoth Cave National Park.  Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world. Other tourists visit the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site and Cumberland Gap National Historic Park.  In 1750, the American Thomas Walker explored Kentucky and in 1751, Christopher Gist explored Kentucky.
