Idaho.gif (360 bytes)    Idaho entered the union on July 30, 1890 as state number 43. Idaho’s nickname is the Gem state for Gem of the mountains. Idaho has an area 83,574 square miles and is the fourteenth largest state.

Need an activity or project for your school report?  Here are a few ideas from Challenge magazine, Issue 80, which you can use to show what you have learned about Idaho.

Organize a potato dinner for the class.  Invite each student to prepare and bring his or her favorite potato recipe.
Make potato ink stamps by carving raw potatoes.  Print stationary for your principal or a special friend.
Acro, Idaho is the home of  the world's first nuclear power plant.   Organize a group to debate the pros and cons of nuclear energy.
Barbara Morgan from McCall, Idaho was the first runner-up in the Teacher-in-Space Program.  Write a poem about the Space Shuttle Challenger as if you were Barbara Morgan.
There are many beautiful wildlife-viewing site in Idaho.  Paint a watercolor of an area you might view. 
The Idaho state song is "Here We Have Idaho."  Learn to play the song on an instrument.  Teach it to a music class.
The 1989 legislature designated the square dance as the American Folk Dance of Idaho.  Research the history of the square dance, learn a few steps, and teach it to a gym class.
