Georgia.gif (440 bytes)  Georgia is a state in the Southeast region of the United States. Its capital is Atlanta and is nicknamed the Peach State. Georgia is bordered to the north by Tennessee and North Carolina, to the east by South Carolina, to the south by Florida, and to the west by Alabama. Most of the northern part of Georgia is part of the Piedmont Plateau. Three regions of the Appalachian Mountains make up most of the northern part of Georgia. The Blue Ridge is under a solid crystal rock or rocks such as gneiss. The northwestern corner of Georgia contains narrow, mostly unfertile valleys bordered by ridges.

Georgia has many historical sites and monuments. On Saint Simons Island there is a fort built by the British in the 18th century. Andersonville National Historical Site has a Civil War prisoner-of-war camp, and on Tybee Island is Fort Pulaski National Monument, which includes a fort attacked by Union Forces in 1862.
